International Year of Glass: Home

This guide is a hub for information about how Alfred University is recognizing 2022 as the International Year of Glass.

About this Guide

The United Nations General Assembly declared 2022 to be the International Year of Glass, in recognition of the importance of the material in human history, our lives today, and the future. The New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University is one of only a few institutions with a focus on glass art and engineering.

This guide contains information about the International Year of Glass and the NYS College of Ceramics. It is also a collection of the goings-on at Alfred University in recognition of the Year of Glass.

Dedication to "Modern Glass Science" by Dr. Samuel R. Scholes Sr. (7th revised edition)

To that observant man, unknown, unsung,
Who saw what countless men before had missed:
The gleam, among the ashes of his fire,
Of glass; who pondered long with knitted brows,
And tried, and failed, and tried again, until
He found how it was made from earth and fire.
And to the heirs of his creative zeal,
Who handed down from age to age the art
Of glass; who tireless sought for better ways,
Improving bit by bit their gift to men
Of usefulness and beauty--that which is
The eye of science, carrier of light.
